Message From Sheriff Smith

Dear Friends and Neighbors,

Welcome to the Meriwether County Sheriff’s Office website. We have developed this site to assist you, our citizens, with information relating to crime and other events that involve the Meriwether County Sheriff’s Office.

I make my home in Gay, Georgia. I am married to the former Carmen Williams of Alvaton. We have two children, Gabe and Kersten. I am a member of the First Methodist Church in Pine Mountain. I attended Flint River Academy in Woodbury before graduating from Harris County High School. I studied criminal justice at Southern Union State Community College in Valley, AL.,LaGrange College in LaGrange and Columbus State University in Columbus, GA. receiving a Specialized Law Enforcement Certificate and a Professional Certificate in Criminal Justice. I am a graduate of the West Georgia Police Academy in Columbus. I am a P.O.S.T. certified field training officer. I am an Eagle Scout and a life time member of the National Eagle Scout Association, the Georgia Sheriffs’ Association, National Sheriffs’ Association, Georgia Jail Association and the American Jail Association.

I began my law enforcement career in Meriwether County in 1983 under the direction of Sheriff Dan Branch. I have worked for Troup County Sheriffs’ Donny Turner and Gene Jones, and Coweta County Sheriff Mike Yeager. I returned to Meriwether County in 2001 serving as chief deputy sheriff. During my 29 year career, I have worked through the ranks serving as a radio operator, jailer, deputy sheriff, criminal investigator, chief deputy sheriff and ex-officio sheriff.

I consider it an honor to serve as your Sheriff. I sincerely want to thank each of you for the support and trust you have bestowed in me. Your input and suggestions are important to us. We look forward to serving you as we continuously strive to provide the best law enforcement and community services while diligently working to protect the lives and property of our citizens.
