Aggravated Assault, Aggravated Battery Investigation with Arrest Made

Meriwether County Sheriff Chuck Smith reported that his agency has made several recent arrests in reference to two persons being shot and another injured in a shooting incident that occurred on Zebra Lane, Grantville, Georgia.

“On May 21, 2016 at around 02:35 am our Patrol Division, Investigative Division and Command Staff responded to the area of Zebra Lane, Grantville, Georgia in regard to a report of several people being shot. Upon our Patrol Units arriving on the scene they encountered a large crowd in a field at the end of Zebra Lane which is a private drive. They located two male individuals that had been shot laying on the ground next to a driveway adjacent to an open field. A third male subject was located that was not shot but had been struck by broken glass related to the shooting. All three victims had arrived at the location together in a vehicle just prior to the incident taking place. Meriwether County EMS responded to the scene and transported the two male gunshot victims to area hospitals for medical treatment. The other male subject that was injured by flying glass was transported by a personal vehicle to an area hospital for treatment of his injuries. Two of the victims are residents of Troup County, Georgia and the other victim is a resident of both Troup and Meriwether County.

Our personnel began investigating the events that led up to the shooting. It was determined that the three male victims had just recently arrived at the incident location in a black SUV. As they arrived they encountered several other subjects driving what was described as a white in color vehicle that was exiting the driveway of a location referred to as the “Suga Shack”. Information that was received was that the suspect(s) in the white in color vehicle were reportedly were made to leave a party that was taking place at the dilapidated building, “Suga Shack”. During this time these two vehicles met at the fork of the driveway. The black SUV was headed into the location and the white vehicle was traveling out. According to information that was received some words were exchanged by the suspects regarding getting by or past the victims vehicle as they encountered each other. Reportedly without provocation the suspects began firing at one of the victims as he had exited the black SUV to walk to the location during this impasse. This male victim was struck several times by rounds fired from a semi-auto handgun and was the most severely injured. The suspect(s) then began firing indiscriminately into the black SUV that was occupied by the remaining two victim’s as the suspect(s) were driving out of the location. The male driver sustained lacerations from flying glass that came through the glass of the vehicle and the other male victim received a gunshot graze wound to the upper body. The suspects then fled the area in the white in color vehicle.

While our patrol units were trying to assist EMS with the injured victims, deal with the large crowd and identify witnesses they encountered a female that began to incite the crowd. The female was intoxicated and was obstructing our personnel in their investigation of this very volatile incident. This female also struck one of our patrol deputies as he was trying to conduct his job duties in this incident. The female identified as Tiffany Nicole Jones W/F, 19 yoa. of American Legion Road, Hogansville, Ga. was arrested on the scene for the offense of 1 misdemeanor count Obstruction of an Officer, 1 felony count Obstruction of an Officer, Criminal Interference with Government Property, Terroristic Threats an Acts, Public Drunk and Consumption of Alcohol under Age. Tiffany Jones was transported to the Meriwether County Jail and charged as stated.

Our investigators began collecting evidence from the scene and responded to area hospitals to gather information along with evidence from the victim’s in this matter. Through the course of this investigation we were able to identify and arrest two suspects in this incident. On May 31, 2016 around 1620 hours we arrested Deontravious Shamar Bonner, B/M, 20 years of age, with listed addresses of Cowan Road, Griffin, Georgia and Short Jay Street, Woodbury, Georgia. Deontravious Bonner was charged with the offenses of 3 counts Aggravated Assault, 1 count of Aggravated Battery, Possession of a Firearm during the Commission of a Crime. Also arrested was his brother Zaquavier Saquan Bonner, B/M, 21 years of age. Zaquavier Bonner was charged with the offenses of 3 counts Party to a Crime Aggravated Assault and 1 Count of Party to a Crime Aggravated Battery. Both Bonner’s were arrested at the Meriwether County Sheriff’s Office and are being held in the Jail without bond.

All of the victim’s in this incident have now been released from the hospitals that they were being treated. The two with none life threating injuries were out of the hospital within a few days. The victim that was the most severely injured was just recently released. His injuries were more sever and he still has a long road to recovery.

Our investigation revealed that the party was being held without the consent or knowledge of elderly property owner who resides out of town. Our agency has obtained the written consent of this property owner to enforce the laws of criminal trespass against those that are found to be on this property without authority. We are in the process of further addressing this dilapidated building referred to as the “Suga Shack”. We had Meriwether County Building and Zoning come out and inspect the property based on what we saw during our investigation and it has been deemed uninhabitable. There were numerous electrical and plumbing issues too include raw sewage coming from the building along with jumped or spliced electricity being run to the location. We are working toward getting this building demolished.

This is still an open and active investigation with more arrest expected. If anyone has any additional information regarding this case investigation, call the Meriwether County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigative Division at (706) 672-6647.
