Meriwether County Sheriff Chuck Smith reported that his personnel are investigating the discovery of a human body part that was located in a wooded area off of Coleman Creek Circle, Luthersville, Georgia.
“On March 7, 2016 around 6:00 pm our patrol deputies responded to a remote area of Coleman Creek Circle, Luthersville, Ga. in regard to a report of possible human remains found in a wooded area. At that time our patrol personnel along with our investigative division responded to the location. Our scene examination revealed that one human body part in a skeletal form was found. The body part appears to have been in its current state for an extended period of time, due to its condition. Our personnel along with the GBI Crime Scene Unit photographed and processed the scene. We also called in Alpha Team K9 Cadaver Dogs to conduct a grid search to try and locate any other human remains in the area. There has not been any additional discovery at this time. The Meriwether County Coroner’s Office responded to the scene and transported the recovered body part to the GBI Crime Lab. The Crime Lab will begin the process of attempting to determine race, sex, approximate age and any apparent causes of death. They will compare any DNA evidence that they have on file against any missing persons in the data base. The GBI Crime Lab will utilize their resources in forensic science to help with identifying this skeletal remain and determining approximately how long the person has been deceased. We have also forwarded all missing persons information reported to this agency to the GBI for comparison. We will release additional information once it comes available from the crime lab and our investigation.” Sheriff Chuck Smith said.
