“On August 4, 2016 around 6:30 pm our patrol deputies responded to a wooded area off of Hugh O’Neal Road in regard to a back-hoe that had been located on some leased hunting property. A deer hunter was riding his ATV on the property in preparation for the upcoming deer season. As he was checking some of his hunting sites he came upon a back-hoe that was concealed in some over grown vegetation. Once our personnel got on the scene we determined that this was in fact the back-hoe that had been stolen back in January of this year from a Meriwether County Public Works job site on Fleming Road. The recovery location was approximately 3.2 miles from the theft location. The public works department was called to the location regarding the recovery of the stolen back-hoe. The scene conditions of recovery were very heavily grown up. The back-hoe was wedged in between some trees that had to be removed for the recovery to take place. Public works made arrangements for additional equipment to be brought in the following morning in order to get the back-hoe out. The back-hoe is in pretty good condition and operable other than some minor cosmetic damage, based on Public Works Director Tyrell Johnson’s assessment. The recovery value being around $60,000.00 and this incident is still under investigation. If any persons have any knowledge of this incident or saw the back-hoe in transit on or around January 15, 2016, contact the Meriwether County Sheriff’s Office at (706) 672-4489.” Sheriff Chuck Smith said.
